English Translation

In life, there was a star, Agreed, it was very dear. If it set, then it set, Look at the face of the sky, How many of its stars have broken, How many of its beloved ones are lost. Those who are lost, where are they found again? But tell me, for the fallen stars, When does the sky mourn? What's past is past.

But the night is still remaining, And the hope of a new dawn is still remaining. In those broken, fragmented stars, The desire for a new ray is still remaining. From seeds fallen in the soil, A sprout of new life emerges. Then why should your heart remain sad? Why remember what's past? A new morning, a new story, Why not create the flow of your life.

Literary & Historical Context

This excerpt from Harivansh Rai Bachchan's iconic poem "जो बीत गई सो बात गई" (What's Past Is Past) embodies a profound philosophy of resilience, acceptance, and moving forward. Written in a simple yet powerful language, typical of Bachchan's style, the poem encourages individuals not to dwell on past losses or sorrows. Through the metaphor of a fallen star and the unceasing nature of the sky, it conveys that life continues despite individual misfortunes. The sky, vast and eternal, does not mourn its countless lost stars; similarly, humans should embrace the impermanence of things and not let past failures or heartbreaks define their future. It's a call to let go of what cannot be changed and to find strength in the present and hope for tomorrow. This work is a celebrated piece of 'Halavadi' poetry, a style characterized by its celebration of individual human experience and a philosophical approach to life's realities, making it a cornerstone of 20th-century Hindi literature.
