English Translation

On a creeper in the secluded forest, Slept a fresh bud. Alone. Quietly. But coincidentally, no one Was there at that time. She was new, Pure, Tender, And in herself, She was, And she was alone.

AI Echo (Hindi)

AI Echo (English)

With the gentle tap of a cool breeze, She trembled softly. In a dream, intoxicated, Spreading a sweet fragrance. Then a bumblebee drew near, Bringing its dance of love. Her petals eager to unfurl, As if someone were watching.

Literary & Historical Context

(The Jasmine Bud) is a foundational poem in Hindi's Chhayavad (Romanticism) movement, published in 1916. It broke traditional poetic norms by using free verse (muktak chhand) and a highly sensual, imaginative depiction of nature. The poem personifies a jasmine bud awakening to the love of a breeze, exploring themes of natural beauty, solitude, and the blossoming of nascent emotions. Nirala's use of rich imagery and musicality, combined with its innovative form, marked a significant departure from the didactic and formalistic poetry prevalent at the time, establishing him as one of the four pillars (Chatushtayi) of Chhayavad, alongside Prasad, Pant, and Mahadevi Verma. This excerpt introduces the solitary, pristine state of the bud before its encounter, setting the stage for the poem's exploration of awakening love.
