(Bahut Dinon Ke Baad)

Composed by नागार्जुन (Nagarjun)

English Translation

After many days, This time I fully gazed upon The smile of ripe, golden harvests. After many days, This time I fully inhaled The fresh, budding branch of the Mahua tree, Its blooming fragrance. After many days, This time I fully clapped my hands And ate Makhana nuts (fox nuts from a pond), The joy of walking barefoot On the village path. After many days, This time I fully experienced The sound of paddy husking.

And now, Again I saw the chirping of birds, The clamor of new life in nests. Hearing the sweet flute's tune, Lost in memories of moments past, I found myself once more In the earthy fragrance of soil, Where in every particle lies life's essence. After many days, this joy My eyes drank to the full, And in my heart settled An incomparable world of peace.

Literary & Historical Context

Nagarjun (Vaidyanath Mishra, 1911-1998) was a towering figure in 20th-century Hindi and Maithili literature, often celebrated as a 'people's poet' for his poignant and realistic portrayal of rural life and social issues. (After Many Days) is a quintessential example of his lyrical style, marked by its simplicity, directness, and a deep, visceral connection to the earth and its inhabitants. The poem captures the profound joy and sensory richness experienced upon returning to one's village after a long absence. It revels in the small, often overlooked details of agrarian existence: the radiant smile of golden fields, the intoxicating aroma of blooming Mahua, the simple pleasure of eating local produce, the liberating sensation of walking barefoot on village paths, and the rhythmic sound of paddy husking. Through these vivid, tangible images, Nagarjun evokes a powerful sense of belonging, nostalgia, and the enduring beauty found in the purity of nature and community life. The poem stands as a significant work for its celebration of agrarian heritage and its ability to ground readers in the essential, often forgotten, joys of a life connected to the land.
