The Nine Grahas & Twelve Rashis
The 9 Grahas are cosmic forces that seize human consciousness (Graha comes from the root grah, to seize). In this chapter, we master their classical dignities and synthesize them with a diagnostic clinical symptom matrix.
Ch. 3, Verse 11: सूर्यः आत्मा जगतस्तस्थुषश्च...
The Sun is the soul of all beings; the Moon is the mind; Mars is physical prowess; Mercury is speech; Jupiter is wisdom; Venus is reproductive vitality; Saturn is sorrow and endurance.
Ch. 4: ग्रहाणां उच्चनीच क्षेत्राणि...
The planetary exaltations, debilitations, and moolatrikona zones determine the divine currency through which destiny operates.
The 9 Grahas: Classical Dignities & Diagnostic Symptoms
Clinical Shastra Takeaway: You do not need a telescope to know which Graha is afflicted. Observe bodily signals (gut fermentation, thumb pain) and home Vastu indicators (seepage, rusted iron, electrical sparks)!
1. The Classical Dignity Hierarchy
Each Graha operates with varying degrees of sovereignty across the 12 signs:
- Exaltation (Uccha - Peak Strength):
- Sun in Aries (10° peak), Moon in Taurus (3° peak), Mars in Capricorn (28° peak), Mercury in Virgo (15° peak), Jupiter in Cancer (5° peak), Venus in Pisces (27° peak), Saturn in Libra (20° peak), Rahu in Taurus/Gemini, Ketu in Scorpio/Sagittarius.
- Debilitation (Neecha - Distressed / Inverted Strength):
- Exactly 180° opposite to exaltation: Sun in Libra, Moon in Scorpio, Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Pisces, Jupiter in Capricorn, Venus in Virgo, Saturn in Aries, Rahu in Scorpio/Sagittarius, Ketu in Taurus/Gemini.
- Moolatrikona (Office of Governance): The sign where the planet conducts its primary administrative duty (e.g. Sun in Leo 0°–20°, Moon in Taurus 3°–30°, Mars in Aries 0°–12°).
- Swakshetra (Own Sign / Sanctuary): The planet’s comfortable home sanctuary.
- Digbala (Directional Strength):
- Jupiter & Mercury in 1st House (East - intellect & wisdom).
- Sun & Mars in 10th House (South - zenith of executive leadership).
- Saturn in 7th House (West - dusk, public service, justice).
- Moon & Venus in 4th House (North - nadir, midnight, psychological sanctuary & home).
2. Functional Benefics & Malefics by Lagna
A planet's behavior depends heavily on the Lagna:
- Natural Benefics: Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, unafflicted Mercury.
- Natural Malefics: Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Sun, waning Moon, afflicted Mercury.
- Yogakaraka: A single planet that simultaneously rules a Kendra (pillar) and a Trikona (trine). For Taurus and Libra Lagna, Saturn is Yogakaraka! For Cancer and Leo Lagna, Mars is Yogakaraka!
- Kendradhipati Dosha: When natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus) rule Kendras without occupying or aspecting their own signs, their benevolent giving capacity becomes neutral or inhibited.
3. Combustion (Asta) & Retrogression (Vakri)
Special planetary states:
- Combustion (Asta): When a planet travels within close orbital proximity to the Sun (Mercury within 14°, Venus within 10°, Mars within 17°, Jupiter within 11°, Saturn within 15°). The physical significations are scorched or internalized into soul consciousness.
- Retrogression (Vakri): When an outer planet is opposite the Sun, moving backward in apparent geocentric motion. A retrograde planet is bright, close to Earth (Cheshta Bala), and carries unfinished karmic business from past lives.
4. The Outer Planets: Indra (Uranus), Varuna (Neptune) & Yama (Pluto)
While classical Parashari Jyotisha primarily uses the 9 Grahas, contemporary Vedic researchers also analyze the trans-Saturnian outer planets: Uranus (Indra - sudden disruptive awakening), Neptune (Varuna - spiritual haze, false starts, artistic dissolution), and Pluto (Yama - deep underground transformation, ruthless death/rebirth). Concrete Worked Clinical Examples
Example 1: Saturn as Supreme Yogakaraka for Taurus Lagna
Because Saturn rules both a Dharma Trikona (H9) and a Karma Kendra (H10), it becomes the single most auspicious planet in the entire horoscope. When placed in Aquarius (its Moolatrikona), it forms the exalted Sasa Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga, granting enduring political or industrial leadership.
Example 2: Mars Debilitation with Digbala in 10th House
Mars is debilitated (Neecha) in Cancer, yet it occupies the 10th house where it achieves maximum Directional Strength (Digbala). The native feels internal emotional friction and impatience (Cancer), but in their professional career they execute with relentless command. If Moon is well-placed, Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga blossoms!
Example 3: Spotting Afflicted Moon from Real-Life Symptoms
This is a textbook case of afflicted Chandra (Moon). The physical seepage in NNE mirrors the leaky emotional container. The remedy is stopping the 3 white foods after sunset (Rice, Milk, Plain Water) and drinking water infused with a Tulsi leaf from a clay or copper cup.
Inspect Planetary Dignities & Digbala
Open the Kundali Studio and review your planetary table. Check which planets have Uccha (Exalted), Neecha (Debilitated), or Swakshetra (Own Sign) status, and verify whether any Graha occupies its Digbala house (1, 4, 7, or 10)!
