Reading the Cosmic Blueprint
The 12 Bhavas (houses) are the stages upon which the 9 Grahas act out their karmic scripts. Knowing how to read both North Indian diamond charts and South Indian sign-fixed grids is essential for every Jyotishi.
Ch. 11, Verse 1: अथ भावानां फलानि वक्ष्ये...
Now I shall expound upon the fruits of the twelve houses, wherein the entire manifestation of human experience is organized.
Ch. 1, Verse 17: लग्नं देहः...
Lagna represents physical existence, vitality, and stature. From each house, specific karakatvas flow into manifestation.
Chart Graphing Traditions: North, South & The 12 Bhavas
Clinical Shastra Takeaway: A North Indian chart is house-fixed; a South Indian chart is sign-fixed. Learn both so you never get lost in different graphing traditions!
1. Regional Chart Styles: North vs. South vs. East
Jyotisha uses three traditional visual graphing conventions:
- North Indian (House-Fixed Diamond):
- The top-center diamond is always the 1st House (Lagna).
- Houses count counter-clockwise (H1 at top, H2 to its top-left, H4 at far left, H7 at bottom, H10 at top-right).
- The numbers written inside the compartments represent Zodiac Signs (1=Aries, 2=Taurus, ..., 12=Pisces), NOT house numbers!
- South Indian (Sign-Fixed Grid):
- The 12 compartments permanently represent the 12 signs in clockwise order (Aries is permanently the 2nd box from top-left, Taurus is 3rd, Gemini top-right, etc.).
- The 1st House (Lagna) is marked with an ascending diagonal slash or the label "Asc / Lagna".
- Houses count clockwise starting from the box where Lagna is located.
- East Indian (Surya / Bengali Style):
- Similar to South Indian but with diagonal diamond cross-hatching, counting counter-clockwise.
2. Functional House Classifications
The 12 houses are classified into distinct energetic groups:
- Kendras (Pillars / Quadrants - 1, 4, 7, 10): The four Vishnu-sthanas of action, stability, domestic life, and public career. Planets placed here have enormous power to execute.
- Trikonas (Trines - 1, 5, 9): The Lakshmi-sthanas of divine grace, past-life merit (Purva Punya), intelligence, and higher dharma. Always auspicious.
- Upachayas (Houses of Growth - 3, 6, 10, 11): Malefic planets (Mars, Saturn, Rahu) excel here because their grit, competitive stamina, and persistence produce compounding wealth and victory over time.
- Dusthanas (Houses of Difficulty - 6, 8, 12):
- H6: Disease, debt, litigation, daily service (can be conquered through Upachaya discipline).
- H8: Sudden shocks, surgeries, longevity, hidden assets, deep esoteric research, legacies.
- H12: Expenses, isolation, foreign lands, hospitals, bed pleasures, and spiritual liberation (Moksha).
- Marakas (Death-Inflicting Houses - 2, 7): Houses 2 and 7 are 12th from H3 and H8 (the houses of longevity).
3. The Four Purusharthas (Life Goals)
Every human ambition maps into one of four cosmic pursuits:
- Dharma (Righteous Purpose): Houses 1, 5, 9 (Fire trine).
- Artha (Material Wealth & Security): Houses 2, 6, 10 (Earth trine).
- Kama (Desire & Relational Enjoyment): Houses 3, 7, 11 (Air trine).
- Moksha (Spiritual Liberation & Detachment): Houses 4, 8, 12 (Water trine).
Concrete Worked Clinical Examples
Example 1: Identifying Lagna & House 7 Across Styles
In the North Indian chart, the top diamond is House 1. Because it contains the number "7", the native has Libra Lagna (Tula). House 7 is the bottom diamond, which contains the number "1" (Aries). In the South Indian chart, the Libra box is permanently fixed, and houses count clockwise from it.
Example 2: Malefics in Upachaya Houses
While classical beginners fear Saturn and Mars, in Upachaya houses (3, 6) they produce extraordinary grit, athletic endurance, and the ability to defeat competitors in litigation or business. The native thrives under adversity.
Example 3: H8 as Hidden Wealth & Esoteric Insight
House 8 is not solely about death or trauma. It is the house of subterranean discovery, insurance claims, unexpected inheritances, deep coding architectures, and mystical Jyotish mastery. Jupiter in H8 grants unearned legacy wealth and deep intuitive downloads.
