Composed by जयशंकर प्रसाद

English Translation

Amidst the tumultuous din and strife, I am the heart's voice, O my mind! Bearing agonizing pain, I am the arrow of patience, O my mind! How can I hide this heart, When life is so dense and dark. Eternal peace resides within the heart, But outside is an endless war. In the sound rising from the waves, I am the silent sorrow's tale, O my mind!

AI Echo (Hindi)

What kind of internal conflict is this, Peace within, conflict without. How shall I untangle this knot, When in every direction there is darkness. Will that path ever be found, Where the mind can be free of conflict? Let a lamp of hope burn, Amidst this deep darkness. This dark night of agony, Will it bring forth a new dawn? This traveler waits in anticipation, To meet my new horizon.

Literary & Historical Context

"तुमुल कोलाहल कलह में" is a highly celebrated and iconic poem by Jaishankar Prasad, one of the four pillars of Chhayavaad (Romanticism) in Hindi literature. This excerpt is from 'कामायनी' (Kamayani), his magnum opus, specifically from the 'इड़ा' (Ida) canto, where Ida, representing intellect and reason, addresses the struggling Manas (mind/heart) amidst life's chaos. The poem beautifully captures the internal conflict between external turmoil (tumultuous din and strife) and the yearning for inner peace. Prasad's use of evocative imagery and profound philosophical inquiry into the human condition – the search for solace and meaning amidst life's inherent struggles – is central to its significance. It reflects the Chhayavadi emphasis on introspection, emotional depth, and a spiritual quest, while also touching upon the universal human experience of seeking stability in a chaotic world. The poem's lyrical quality and profound philosophical undertones make it a timeless piece in Hindi literature.
