(Let the Path be Unfamiliar)

Composed by महादेवी वर्मा (Mahadevi Verma)

English Translation

Let the path be unfamiliar, Let the soul remain alone. Others might have weary steps, Others might be those who return, yielding all resolutions to pain, But this one, a votary of sorrow, mad with creation, These steps measure immortality; They will bind the world of numbers With a golden hour in the darkness.

Yes, this is the truth, the path unknown, Yet in the heart, firm resolve is sown. The way is solitary, but faith is the guide, In every challenge, a new glimmer hides. It calls forth light even in the deepest night, Dust particles too sing songs of victorious might. In every atom of creation, life's sound resides, On the path of immortality, every rich soul rides. This journey will never cease, A new sun will rise, bringing peace.

Literary & Historical Context

Mahadevi Verma (1907-1987) was a seminal figure of the Chhayavaad (Romanticism) era in Hindi literature, often hailed as 'Modern Meera'. Her poetry is deeply mystical, imbued with spiritual longing, a sense of personal sacrifice, and profound individualism. (Let the Path be Unfamiliar) is a powerful assertion of a solitary soul's unwavering resolve on a difficult, unknown spiritual journey. It rejects conventional paths and comforts, embracing sorrow ('दुख-व्रती') as a means to creative enlightenment and immortality. The poem's central theme revolves around the courage to pursue one's unique destiny despite loneliness, driven by an inner fire ('निर्माण-उन्मद' - mad with creation) that transforms darkness into a 'golden hour'. It reflects Mahadevi's characteristic blend of profound personal emotion, philosophical depth, and rich symbolic imagery, establishing her as a voice of spiritual fortitude and existential exploration in Hindi poetry.
